A Truth Universally Acknowledged

It has been a very, very busy week+, and so I haven't really done anything worthwhile since I last updated.  Well - I guess that depends on the definition of "worthwhile".  I haven't done anything besides write reports and compile data, which though important, can get a little tiresome.  I get into these modes where my life revolves around work, which is just not good for my well-being.

Fortunately, the weekend has been quiet, and I have had some time to myself to take care of my newest undertaking.

"Oh, god.  Victoria has become a lonely crazy cat lady who is going to just post stupid cutesy pictures of the cat for the rest of the duration of this blog."

Well, hold on.  Just because I work at a shelter, that does not make me that weird "Boo the Cutest Puppy" owner.  A few weeks ago, a co-worker of mine found a kitten under his porch.  Unfortunately, his significant other is allergic to cats, so they wanted to find an owner for it instead of giving it to the SPCA or some other shelter.  After some pressure persuasion from another friend, I decided to take the little one in - if only to keep my co-worker's lady from breaking out in hives.

Yeah, she's cute in that baby animal kind of way, but I'm still up in the air if this is going to be a permanent thing.  First - I would consider myself more of a "dog" person, so I'm pretty sure this would constitute as cheating on Suzie.  Second - I didn't want a pet for another 5 years, i.e. - not until I was settled in one place.  And a multitude of other good and not-so-good reasons.  So, again, we'll see.

More exciting, though, my best mate from grade school is getting married this week.

L-R:  Me, the lucky lady, and some crazy vet-in-training
This picture is so old - and oddly, the only fecking picture I could find with you and me.  G, why are there like zero pictures of us together?  We have known each other since we were 6-years-old.  This is unacceptable.  And now you live in Scandinavia.  Not OK, G.  Not OK.

:P

Joking aside, this is kind of a big day for all involved, as she is the first in our "high school circle" to be getting hitched.  So to commemorate the day, aside from the usual registry gifts, I thought I'd add a little extra something.  As you might have guessed, I am a nerd and come from a circle of nerds.  In particular, I come from a Pride and Prejudice-loving clan.   Inspired as of late by this amazing re-imagining of the classic tale, decided to do something a little... old style.

I post this in the hopes that the Bride-to-Be is too busy this week to read my blog, so sorry if this ruins any surprises, dear.

I learned how to Coptic stitch a few years ago, on a whim.  While not a difficult thing to perform (there are tutorials everywhere on the Internet), it is very time consuming.

I'm happy with how the cover turned out - it is text from the original P&P on tea-stained paper, pasted to a cork-board backing.  So, if you minus the bit that I didn't make the cork-board or the paper, this journal was made from scratch.  It took about half a day to finish, and could easily be accomplished over a series of days.  So if you're ever inclined to make a journal of your own instead of buying one from Barnes and Noble or such 'n such, this is a good free-time project.

Now to find a dress to wear, because I haven't had a formal event in years, and I no longer fit into anything I own  DX

'Til the next.
